Stp216 Ortolan
Large HQ bunker site hidden in chateau grounds
Stp216 Ortolan site overview
What to see
Situated on the eastern side of the small village of Wimille – inland of the coastal town of Wimereux – is one of the most extensive bunker sites in the area, although few of the buildings can still be seen without private access.
This headquarters site stands in the grounds of a stunning chateau and a large farm and once boasted a special construction Kommandostand HQ building, garages, personnel shelters, a kitchen bunker, aid shelter, defensive Tobruks, a radio and communications bunker, and two large Luftschutz air-raid shelters.
It is one of the remaining air-raid shelters which can be seen from the Rue du Lieutenant Michel Dely east of the village, but all the other buildings are now either buried under modern construction or inaccessible to the public.
Stp216 Ortolan stands less than 500 metres away from one of the largest gun batteries ever built in northern France – the massive Batterie Friedrich August. This Kriegsmarine batterie featured three special construction casemates built around 30.5cm Skoda Naval guns which fired shells over the England Channel to bombard Dover and south coast of England.
