Stp August

Borderland bunker site on Bray Dunes’ beach and dune area

Stp August site overview

What to see

One of the most easterly bunker sites in France, Stp August is located just a few kilometres from the French/Belgian border at Bray Dunes.
The site features three defensive buildings at the beachfront and four supporting bunkers behind the beach in the extensive dune system.
Stp August’s largest defensive building is the R677 casemate which faces north east and enabled its 88mm Pak43/41 gun to fire along the beach. To its rear – and once situated in the dunes – is an open emplacement for a 5cm KwK anti-tank gun, a Krupp-built weapon which became obsolete during German tank development and was repurposed as a defensive gun on the Atlantikwall bunker sites.
Less than 50 metres along the dunes is the third defensive casemate – this one constructed for a LAG heavy gun – which also features a Tobruk for observation and a machine gun. Due to shifting sands this building is almost completely buried.
Three of the four inland bunkers are also almost fully buried with one – one of two R668 shelters for up to six men completely inaccessible now. The other R668 forms the base of a viewing platform in the dunes.
Although difficult to spot, there’s also a R621 single group shelter to be found here but only a short section of outer wall and a Tobruk opening are visible. It’s a similar story for the R607 ammunition storage bunker although you can still see some of the curved roof, a protective wall, and an additional Tobruk which has been cold jointed to the side of the bunker.
