Stp Begonie & Klein Begonie

Twin bunker sites with interlocking fire near Zuydcoote

Stp Begonie & Klein Begonie site overview

What to see

Set back from the beach in the scrubland between Bray Dunes to the east and Zuydcoote in the west you can find the twin bunker sites of Wn Klein Begonie and Stp Begonie.
Both sites can be accessed via a path through woodland and scrub area next to the D60 road between the two villages.
At both sites you’ll find a R680 casemate for a 7.5cm Pak40 anti-tank gun and you’ll notice that the two casemates almost face each other – one facing north east and the other north west.
This set up offer a deadly effective criss-crossing range of fire against any forces moving inland of the beach behind the nearby Stp August bunker site.
At the eastern site, Klein Begonie’s R680 is now a wildlife observation platform and has been sealed so cannot be accessed inside although you can see through a gap in the front embrasure to the gun room inside which is in good condition. A few metres away is a small brick and concrete building which would have been used by the troops manning the casemate. Again, this is no longer accessible inside.
Stp Begonie’s R680 is on the edge of a housing estate and has become buried and overgrown with access only to the roof area. The rear entrance is now almost completely filled in and so it’s difficult to view the inside.
There are multiple supporting buildings scattered around the modern housing including a Vf7a shrapnel-proof ammo storage bunker, three Vf2a personnel shelters, and a Vf51a half-group shelter. All are now within private gardens and a farm.
