Headquarters and medical bunkers in Loon Plage

Stp Holunder site overview

What to see
Located amongst housing in the village of Loon Plage on the west side of Dunkirk you can find two large bunkers which comprised Stp Holunder.
One is a R117a type - an early war Battalion and Regimental headquarters bunker – featuring 16 rooms with spaces for radio communications, an operation room, telephone exchange, officers’ quarters, crew rooms, and a close combat defensive machine gun embrasure covering the entrance.
This building is now part of a small museum which boasts a superb collection of items from the era.
The second building is just a few streets away on Rue Jean Moulin and is a R118c type, a dressing/first aid station. Built from 1943 onwards, they featured around 20 rooms including operating theatres, patient wards, media crew rooms, along with water and fuel storage plus a boiler for heating. This bunker is no longer accessible but can be viewed from the road. It’s now a haven for bats.
