You’d expect a bunker of this size and location to be one bristling with embrasures for guns to protect the entrance to the river Aa and the small port of Gravelines but instead this special construction was built as a hospital.
Located underneath the lighthouse at Petit-Fort-Philippe on the eastern bank of the river, this site is now surrounded by cafes and bars giving visitors a viewpoint over the beach and estuary here.
The bunker is usually closed to the public and the original steel doors are in place. It would be great to see what remains inside one day!
