Location and info
Musee 39-45, 2 rue des Garennes, 62164 Ambleteuse, Pas de Calais
Approximately 15 mins from Boulogne-sur-Mer heading towards Calais on the D940 road at Ambelteuse. You can’t miss it – there’s a Sherman next to the side of the road!
There’s a lot of history behind this US built M4A4 Sherman tank which can be found outside the superb Musée 39-45 at Ambleteuse in Northern France.
Built in Chrysler’s Detroit factory in 1943, this 75mm gun, petrol powered vehicle became part of the First French Army and landed on the beaches of Southern France near Saint Tropez in August 1944.
From there it fought its way to Provence, Vosges, Alsace, and into Germany. It ended the war in Austria in 1945.
From there it was transferred to a French army training facility where it was used to teach tank crews until 1950.
Sadly, it was then dispatched to a live firing range where it was used as a target - you can still see some of the damage inflicted - before being rescued by the museum where it is currently being restored.
The Sherman stands next to several US and French howitzers and a German 88mm flak cannon. Inside you can get up close to Goliath demolition vehicle.
