HKB Fontenay
Field batterie inland of Utah Beach
HKB Fontenay site overview
What to see
HKB Fontenay is one of a series of batteries located along a line of defences which run parallel to the Utah Beach coastline around 2.5km inland.
Included in these are the huge Crisbecq and Azeville batteries to the south, HKB Ozeville to the west, and HKB Mont Coquerel to the north near Quineville.
Despite being just 1km away from the massive Crisbecq batterie, there’s a stark contrast between what remains at the two batterie sites with just a single, damaged shelter standing partially buried in a farmer’s field at the Fontenay site.
HKB Fontenay was listed as Target 13A on the Bombardment Group U’s target list of batteries and was hit by suppressing fire on D-Day.
